An estimate of more than one million Canadians, majority of which is predicted to be students, are anticipated to collaboratively participate in a live webcast today, simultaneously singing a song written by astronaut, Chris Hadfield, and Barenaked Ladies frontman, Ed Robertson. The song entitled “I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing),” was written by Hadfield and Robertson as an exclusive duo of Earth and space, since Hadfield is currently the commander of the International Space Station.

The webcast is scheduled to air on Monday, as Hadfield is scheduled to play the song from the International Space Station while Robertson, along with the participation of a Toronto school choir named Wexford Gleeks, in leading schools and communities across the country. The participation of students is also growing due to their 9th annual Music Monday’s celebration, i.e. an annual event that takes place on first Monday of May, as students from across Canada join together in song.

The executive director of the organizing firm Coalition for Music Education, Holly Nimmons, stated that “that song has been prepared by music makers right across the country.” He explained that “there are 14 different arrangements, various backgrounds and 12 translations, and there’s even an American Sign Language translation so we really have gone above and beyond this year.” Additionally, Nimmons added that the “Commander Hadfield himself says music lights up the neurons in his brain and we believe and know that learning music is an essential component of a well-rounded education.”
