In a press conference on Monday, Toronto police revealed that the suspect who allegedly attacked and killed Nighisti Semret last October has left behind blood DNA evidence because he might have wounded himself during the attack. Semret became a stabbing victim, when she was attacked from behind on Oct. 23, 2012, while walking home from work at around 7 a.m. 55-years-old Semret had recently finished working at a night shift as a supervisor of a cleaning crew at the Delta Chelsea Hotel. Toronto police alleged that the security footage from the area shows her walking down a laneway connecting Bleecker Street to Ontario Street before the attack.

During the news conference, Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux stated that the DNA analysis of blood found from the crime scene also matches with the one collected from Semret’s right fingernail, which indicates that Semret might have scratched the attacker during the conflict. Additionally, he revealed that the attacker’s blood was also found from a bag and an umbrella carried by Semret. It was added that the knife used in the attack is suspected to be a large one, like the one used in a kitchen.

Giroux assuredly confirmed that some of the blood spilled at the scene also belonged to the attacker, which indicates that the suspect might have accidently stabbed himself during the attack, which took place on a dark, rainy morning. Giroux suspects that the attacker would have likely been hit on the arm or hand. Giroux alleged “that wound may or may not have been medically treated.”
