The principle of Riverview High School revealed has confirmed that the 18-year-old girl from Cape Breton, N.S., Emma van Nostrand, who passed away after collapsing while participating in the Toronto Marathon, was a well-liked honours student only weeks away from graduating high school. The Coxheath teen collapsed on Lake Shore Boulevard near the end of the 42-kilometre race on Sunday.

The police confirmed that the teen fell during the marathon and was found without any vital signs, after which several attempts were made to revive her. Consequently, she was quickly transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. Even though Police has confirmed that she suffered a medical emergency, the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed. The principle of Riverview High School, Joe Chisholm, informed that Van Nostrand was a very active student. He stated that “she was very well-liked and very respected,” and “she (was) a very driven, determined young lady.” He further added that “we’re pretty stunned and shocked at the news. Our students are having a tough time with it.” The authorities have dispatched a crisis intervention team to the Riverview High School for offering support for students who are grieving for van Nostrand.

It was found out that Van Nostrand belonged to a family of avid runners. Her father recently competed in the Boston Marathon, where a terrorist attack resulted in the death of three people and more than 200 injured near the finish line. It was her father’s seventh time finishing the prestigious Boston race.
