The former premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty, confessed in front of the justice committee that he made the decision of cancelling the gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga, which he admitted were actually too close to schools and homes. Speaking under oath at the legislature’s justice committee, McGuinty stated that the residents of the two communities were true in opposing the gas plants and admitted that the Liberal government was at fault.
McGuinty mentioned that the Liberals had introduced legislation to obligate industrial wind turbines be located at least 550 metres from homes, but there were no similar rules to govern gas plants. He confessed that the $585-million cost of cancelling the two projects was not anticipated by anyone, though he alleged that he feels to have made the right decision because now no children will be going to classes beside a giant gas-fired generating station. Progressive Conservative energy critic, Vic Fedeli, questioned McGuinty by accusing him of planning the crime, but said the former premier’s henchmen committed the deeds and drove the getaway car. McGuinty was blamed at a heated debate over the gas plant cancellations last fall, which he suddenly adjourned and announced to resign as premier.
Both opposition parties were accusing Premier Kathleen Wynne to have not been helpful and transparent during her testimony about the gas plants last week. PC Leader, Tim Hudak, stated that “I was very disappointed that Premier Wynne was highly evasive when she was before the committee.
