Following a meeting with constituents deeply concerned about rising rents, today in the legislature Davenport MPP Jonah Schein asked Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Linda Jeffrey to close the loophole that excludes thousands of Ontarians from rent control protections.

“Yesterday, I met with constituents of Davenport who are paying the price for a gaping loophole in Ontario’s rent control law,” said Schein. “Like tens of thousands of other tenants across Ontario these people live in rental units built after 1991, which means they are not covered by the rent control guidelines in the Residential Tenancies Act.”

As a result of this loophole, tenants across the province face large, often arbitrary, rent increases that are not affordable.

“This loophole has failed to encourage construction of new rental units, instead it has created a two-tier rental market,” said Schein. “And it has left 60,000 Ontario tenant-households vulnerable, with no rent control.”

“When will the Minister acknowledge this unfairness and protect all tenants in Ontario by closing this loophole?” asked Schein.
