The highly sought independent audit being conducted on the housing claims of three senators as per request of the Senate will present its conclusion today. Several sources have speculated that the audit is anticipated to assert that all three doubtful senators shouldn’t have made claims, however at the same time acknowledging that the rules were unclear too. Among the senators being audited are Mike Duffy, Mac Harb and Patrick Brazeau, who have all claimed tens of thousands of dollars in housing allowance claims in recent years.
The Senate committee supervising the audit report held a meeting on Wednesday night, which was also attended by Duffy and Harb. The former Conservative senator who is now Independent, Brazeau, is currently suspended from the Senate in lieu of criminal charge in a separate matter. The audit of the senator’s expenses is being conducted by Deloitte. The Senate is anticipated to release a response to the report this afternoon, which might also include new rules for senators.
Senator Harb kept on claiming that his primary residence is outside the capital since 2010, although he had lived in Ottawa for decades. However, he claims to have moved to a bungalow near Pembroke, Ont., about 145 kilometres from Ottawa. The senate allows senators who live more than 100 kilometres from Ottawa to receive claims of housing expenses of up to $22,000 a year. Harb’s home near Pembroke is now open for sale, as he asserts to have lost his right to privacy. He listed the property almost two weeks ago.
