RCMP revealed that a young man was assumed dead and another remains swept over the Gold Creek Falls while swimming in Golden Ears Provincial Park east of Vancouver on Friday. It was confirmed that the rescue crews from Maple Ridge have successfully recovered the body of one man so far, while adding they will return the search for the other on Saturday.
Police explained that a group of five friends witnessed from the shore while a strong current pulled the two men away, who are aged 19 and 21 respectively. RCMP Sgt., Dale Somerville, stated late Friday that “it’s a popular swimming area in the summer, relatively safe in summer when water levels low, but with spring run-off they were swimming and got swept away with high current.” Since there was no cell service in the area, it took almost 15 minutes after the group asked for help. Maple Ridge assistant fire chief, Howard Exner, stated that “it is a very dangerous time of year to swim,” because “the water moves very quickly and it is hard to determine how dangerous it can be.”
Police did not release the identities of either man, though it was disclosed that one is from Surrey and the other is from Delta. Sgt. Somerville stated that “they’re going to concentrate their search in probably the first two to three kilometres of the creek.” He alleged that “they don’t suspect that (the body) would make it all the way out to (nearby Alouette ) Lake,” adding that the “worst-case scenario we could have to wait till the water recedes and that could be a month.”
