The byelection being held in Labrador are being eyed upon by the entire country as voters decide whether or not to allow former MP, Peter Penashue, to continue their representation in the Assembly after his resigning in March due to revelations into his 2011 campaign having accepted ineligible donations. The former cabinet minister was found to have violated Elections Canada rules in the 2011 election.

During his campaign, the former cabinet minister has persistently asserted that he is the best choice for the people of Labrador, highlighting that a Conservative MP will be a better fit for the people of Labrador. Penashue stated that “you have members that will be going into the opposition, that’s one choice, and then you have me, who will be going into the cabinet.” Furthermore, he boasted to have withheld approval for a project in Newfoundland until he received an approval for money for a project in Labrador.

Defence Minister, Peter MacKay, was present in the Happy Valley-Goose Bay last week to campaign with Penashue. MacKay alleged to have guaranteed that Penashue will be reinstated at his position in the cabinet if he was re-elected on Monday. However, on the other hand, the Liberal candidate, Yvonne Jones, has proved to be a tough competition for Penashue as well. She claimed that “I’m not a person who’s going to run and ride when times get tough.” Additionally, Jones stated that “I’m not a person who’s going to give up on what’s important to the people of Labrador.”
