An estimate of more than 200 people have been asked to evacuate their homes in rural Alberta while the firefighters struggle to control two wildfires ignited and sustained by the face of high winds. Most recently almost 100 residents of the tiny Hamlet of Nordegg, i.e. almost 200 kilometres southwest of Edmonton at the base of the Rocky Mountains, have been ordered to leave their homes on Sunday, along with an estimate of 100 residents of Lodgepole, i.e. about 100 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.

The Wildfire information officers revealed that the fire near Lodgepole has already burned out 250 hectares of land, while almost 50 firefighters continue to battle the blaze on Sunday evening, along with the help of tankers and helicopters. A fire information officer with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD), Geoff Driscoll, stated that “the wildfire [is] about two kilometres away from Nordegg [and] has grown to about 100 hectares in size.” He added that “it’s still classified as ‘out of control’ and firefighters will continue to fight it throughout the night.” The causes of both fires remain unknown.

It was reported that the conditions have made the situation even worse, as the dry and windy weather conditions remain persistent all over the province. Wildfire information officers asserted on late Sunday that hopefully winds would die out after Monday, allowing fire crews to get a handle on both fires. Residents of Nordegg had been under a one-hour evacuation notice since Thursday as fire crews struggled to contain the blaze whipped up by high winds.
