RCMP has confirmed that a 49-year-old father and his 10-year-old daughter passed away over the weekend, after a large-sized rock fell on their tent while camping on Blackcomb Mountain. Cpl. Rob Knapton stated that the North Vancouver man was well experienced outdoorsman and seems to have had taken all recommended precautionary measures. Knapton confirmed that “they had a safety plan in place, which was to check in at the end, and they’d actually checked in at one point on Saturday night as well.”

However, later when the failed to check in with family as decided on Sunday afternoon, Whistler RCMP was informed quickly. Mr. Knapton explained that “the report was that a father-daughter duo had gone up Blackcomb Mountain on May 11 to camp out overnight and ski tour.” He confirmed that a search-and-rescue effort was immediately put in place, which was suspended at 11 p.m. in the night to later resume again at 6:30 a.m. on Monday. It was not until almost 11 a.m. when searchers located the campers’ tent pitched just above an area known as the windlip.

It was witnessed that a boulder, as large as six to eight feet in width and height, had tumbled down a rock face onto the tent, killing the pair. Knapton assured that “we’re talking about a very substantial size piece of rock.” Knapton later confirmed “that would make sense because it was windy and wet that night.” He added that “we always give the standard advice for back-country skiing and mountain activities: make sure that you’re prepared, you’ve got a safety plan, you’ve got the appropriate safety equipment with you … but the fact is none of that really applies here because they did those things as far as I know.”
