Sen. Patrick Brazeau has expressed his intention of fighting against the decision of an external audit, which was acknowledged by his colleagues in Senate, alleging that he shall repay an estimate of $35,000 in wrongly acquired living expenses. Furthermore, he questioned the innocence of his fellow senators in a spending scandal that has cleared all other members except Brazeau and two other senators.

In an official statement recorded on Tuesday afternoon, Brazeau stated that he provided auditors and a Senate committee with all the documents required to essentially prove that his primary residence is in Maniwaki, Que., and not in Gatineau, Que., just north of Ottawa. This was Brazeau’s first response to the audit report submitted to Senate committee, which established that he improperly billed tens of thousands of dollars in living expenses. On the other hand, the committee also ordered Sen. Mac Harb to repay more than $50,000 in expenses, due to which he has also promised to fight the committee’s decision and threatened to take the matter to court.

The official statement stated that “Senator Brazeau has fulfilled his obligations in forwarding all relevant documentation requested by the committee and auditors.” He added that “it remains unclear if all other sitting senators meet the primary residency indicators – which Senator Brazeau does — or if they were treated with the same scrutiny, rules, regulations and definitions.” Furthermore, it was alleged that “as a result, Senator Brazeau will be seeking greater clarification and will explore all options to have this determination overturned by applying the current policies, rules and regulations pertaining to this matter including calling a public meeting of the Senate Committee on Internal Economy to explain their decision.”
