The current Ontario Premier, Kathleen Wynne, has finally offered an apology for the highly controversial cancellation of two GTA gas plants at the cost of more than the double of what province had estimated, i.e. at least $585 million. Wynne had previously avoided the demand for an apology, asserting that she only regrets the cost of cancelling the plants.

Wynne made exclusive remarks about the gas plants during a TVO show on Tuesday night, speaking to Steve Paikin on The Agenda. She apologized 11 separate times. Wynne mentioned that “I am very sorry that this happened the way it did. I am very sorry about the mistakes that we made. We made mistakes, our government made mistakes, things happened that shouldn’t have happened and they happened in a way that they shouldn’t have happened.” She reiterated that “I’m sorry for that and I take responsibility.” Wynne had replaced former premier, Dalton McGuinty, after he resigned over the escalating air ambulance and cancelled power plant scandals.

Wynne and McGuinty have both testified at a parliamentary committee investigating the cancellation of the Mississauga and Oakville plants. Wynne did not only admit that the decision to kill Mississauga plant was political, but also took complete responsibility for the decision even though she refused to do so in the past. The cancelled Oakville plant cost taxpayers $310 million, while cancelling a partly-built gas plant in Mississauga just days before the 2011 provincial election cost at least $275 million.
