The Conservative Party has officially denied any partaking in the repayment of wrongly acquired living expenses by Senator Mike Duffy. It was previously reported by CTV News on Tuesday night, that the Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s chief of staff, Nigel Wright, allegedly arbitrated and finalized “deal” with Duffy and the management over his reimbursement of taxpayers $90,172 in return for helping him financially and assuring him that the government would go easy on him.

A senator from Prince Edward Island who was found to have owned a home in Ottawa, Duffy, was among the three senators whose living allowance expenses were being reviewed by the external auditing firm Deloitte. However, he voluntarily decided to repay $90,172 in March, i.e. long before the audit published its result last week. A report of CTV, in referenced to an email dated on Feb. 20, mentions Duffy asserting that Wright has worked out a “scenario” where his claimed living expenses would be covered, including money for the repayment.

Exactly two days after that email, Duffy mentioned in a press conference that he admits to have made unintentional errors while filling out the claim forms in which he declared his P.E.I. home as his primary residence, and hence would pay some money back. Consequently, Duffy also refused to fully co-operate with the Deloitte audit, pointing out that he had already returned the wrongly claimed money for the housing allowance. Additionally, Duffy also paid back $1,050 for what he explained as a clerical error.
