Quebec’s corruption inquiry has recently cancelled the testimony of a key witness at the inquiry, i.e. former city manager of Laval, at the last minute on Wednesday, citing reasons that the inquiry counsel does not trusts the witness anymore. The counsel member of the Charbonneau inquiry into corruption in Quebec’s construction contracting, Sonia LeBel, announced that the former city manager of Laval, i.e. Quebec’s third-largest city, will no longer be giving any statement.

In a brief statement, without any details, Ms. LeBel mentioned that “at 9:15 a.m. we received information that seriously put into question the credibility of the next witness, Gaétan Turbide.” The inquiry has already recorded testimonial of numerous remarkable and co-operative witnesses, who expressively exposed a massive system of bid fixing, illegal political financing, and kickbacks in a long list of municipalities in the Montreal region. There have been doubts about the credibility of witnesses in the past, however, no testimony has been cancelled at last minute like this.

Almost 37 people, including former Laval mayor Gilles Vaillancourt, were recently arrested last week and charged with corruption and gangsterism in the most groundbreaking action so far by the province’s anti-corruption squad. Mr. Turbide, along with four others accused of being co-conspirator in a system of kickbacks, have not been charged because police confirms that they have been co-operating with investigators to provide evidence in the criminal cases. It’s not clear how the Charbonneau commission’s questions over Mr. Turbide’s credibility could affect the court case.
