The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax announced to have ended the search and rescue mission for two missing fishermen in New Brunswick, several hours after a body of their companion was found. A boat operating in Tabusintac issued a distress call at around 5:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, as it capsized along with three crew members onboard. Body of only one crew member was discovered from a beach near where the boat got into trouble.

It was disclosed that the RMCP has taken over the rescue mission and will pursue it as a missing person’s case from about 4 p.m. onwards. Speaking on behalf of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, Mike Bonin mentioned that the weather was the primary reason for the situation, which remained bad even after the mayday call. Bonin explained that his agency immediately directed a Cormorant search-and-rescue helicopter and two Coast Guard vessels to join local fishermen in the searching effort. However, now the RCMP will conduct a ground search only. It was mentioned that the difficult decision of ending the exhaustive search of the area offshore of Tabusintac was made around 3:45 p.m.

It was explained that the boat seemingly hit the sandbar in rough seas and began taking on water. Bonin highlighted that the crew members were not wearing life jackets. He stated that “the report was the vessel had run aground. We had reports of three people on the vessel, and they were standing on the hull of the boat trying to get rescued.” Bonin alleged that the matter has been now been turned over to the RCMP.
