Amid the scandalous news of Sen. Duffy having repaid his improperly claimed housing expense from a personal cheque of Prime Minister’s chief of staff, Nigel Wright has announced to resign from his position. Nigel Wright made the announcement of his resignation on Sunday morning, i.e. only few days after it was reported that he personally wrote a cheque to help Senator Mike Duffy in returning approx. $90,000 in improperly claimed senate living expenses. Wright alleged that he believed repaying the improperly claimed funds was “in the public interest,” and he claims sole responsibility for his actions.

In an official press statement, Wright mentioned that “my actions were intended solely to secure the repayment of funds, which I considered to be in the public interest, and I accept sole responsibility.” He explained that “I did not advise the Prime Minister of the means by which Sen. Duffy’s expenses were repaid, either before or after the fact.”

On the other hand, while accepting Wright’s resignation, Harper mentioned that he is doing it with “great regret.” He mentioned in a press statement that “I accept that Nigel believed he was acting in the public interest, but I understand the decision he has taken to resign. I want to thank Nigel for his tremendous contribution to our government over the past two and a half years.” It was further added that Harper’s principal secretary since 2008, Ray Novak, will be temporarily replacing Wright as the prime minister’s chief of staff.
