Emergency crews are attending a rare car explosion in the West End Vancouver on Wednesday morning.  A spokesperson for the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, Capt. Gabe Roder, alleged that the explosion was caused by a leakage of acetylene gas tank stored in a car by a plumber, which was later triggered when the plumber unknowingly used a fob key to open the car shortly before 7 a.m. It was explained that the electronic key caused a small spark which ignited the gas.

Roder confirmed that the plumber remained unharmed, although another young man was shifted to a hospital for treatment of shock. Roder reported that the explosion had huge impact and resulted in major damage to the surrounding buildings, some of which affected as high as 12 storeys up. Reports have confirmed that no residents were injured, although two men driving in a car that was passing by at the time of explosion are being treated for non-life threatening injuries. Roder asserted that he does not anticipate any charges against the plumber, alleging that “he has come close to being seriously injured or killed. No cuts but he’ll be taken to hospital and checked for internal injuries.”

Police has cordoned off the area and traffic is being diverted while officers recommend public to avoid the area. A resident of the adjacent apartment building, Salman Kabir, shared that he was in complete in shock at the time. He alleged that “it was earth-shattering” experience and “then there was just two minutes of just shock. It shook everything. “
