One of the two men arrested in relation to an alleged al-Qaeda-linked terrorist plot to derail a VIA passenger train near Toronto has once again refused to be judged by the Criminal Code, asserting that he will only be satisfied if he is judged by the “holy book” and not by a “book written by humans.” 30-year-old Chiheb Esseghaier made these comments while making a short court appearance via video link at the Old City Hall courthouse in downtown Toronto on Thursday. The case was ultimately adjourned until June 3 in order for Esseghaier to seek some counsel.

Esseghaier started his appearance, saying that “I don’t have lawyer,” after which he agreed the offer of the presiding justice of the peace to return to court in two weeks with a lawyer in place. However, he straight-forwardly mentioned that “I have one point. I have agreed to have a lawyer, no problem, but I wish that this lawyer will cooperate with me… I need the holy book as a reference for my judgment. I don’t want a book written by humans.”

Esseghaier asked the court to let him find a lawyer who would “co-operate” with him by using “the holy book as a reference,” blatantly asserting that “I don’t want a book written by humans.” The court decided to remand Esseghaier into custody and ordered him to return to court next month. The second suspect in the same case, 35-year-old Raed Jaser, also made a brief appearance on Thursday and was asked to return again on June 25.

  1. People who emigrate to Canada need to be made aware, that here in Canada we maintain a healthy separation of church and State. Secular law, ergo the law of the land, supersedes all religious dogma.
There is a VAST difference between religious freedom and a religious oligarchy. If you break the LAW of the land, you will be tried in a secular court, and judged based on our civil laws. You are free to believe as you wish, but do not expect our country to adapt it’s civil law to accommodate your beliefs.
