Reports have confirmed that the members of Rob Ford’s executive committee have asserted to be prepared to handle the day-to-day running of the city, in case time comes when the Toronto mayor is no longer performing his duties amid a highly notorious scandal involving allegations of Mr. Ford having caught on video smoking crack cocaine. The reports allege that Coun. Peter Milczyn has drafted a formal press statement set to be released on Friday, which will officially ask Ford to make a public statement addressing the allegations.
The scandal came to light last week, when the Toronto Star and the U.S. gossip website Gawker published stories asserting that their journalists have witnessed video apparently showing Mr. Ford smoking crack cocaine. Although, the video has not been authenticated or verified by any source. The mayor has unexpectedly refrained from directly addressing the allegations publicly, except for calling the allegations “ridiculous.” Meanwhile, Rob Ford’s brother, Coun. Doug Ford mentioned in a press conference that the stories were completely untrue. Amid such tense conditions, the news of Rob Ford firing his chief of staff on Thursday seems to have even worsened the scenario.
While it remains largely ambiguous whether the city’s executive committee, i.e. a special group of council members operating as mayor’s cabinet, has the legal authority to run the city. A reporter for CBC, Jamie Strashin, reported on Friday that “we hear the executive is going to try and work around [the mayor].” She added that “It looks as if council is prepared to move forward as if he’s not there right now.”
