Liberal party leader Justin Trudeau has harshly criticized the Prime Minster of Canada, Stephen Harper, for allegedly leaving town rather than facing Canadians over the Senate expense scandal. Mr. Trudeau stated that this problem has now undoubtedly gone beyond the red chamber and straight into his office. He alleged that Mr. Harper has consequently made Canadians even more cynical towards politics with his actions and handling of the Senate affair.

Addressing reporters at a gathering in a downtown Halifax shopping mall on Friday, Mr. Trudeau stated that “people are really disappointed with the style of politics that has gone on.” He highlighted numerous alleged mishandlings and ethical lapses he thinks the Prime Minister made while dealing with the situation, which including taking almost more than a week to apologize to Canadians and “running out of town rather than face down Canadians.” He complained that “it really demonstrates the extent to which this government is tone deaf.”

It is notable that Mr. Harper was in South America this week, attending a trip that was scheduled before the scandal came to light. Meanwhile, The Conservatives have faced many setbacks due to the controversial scandal. The Conservatives enforced the resignation of Senators Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin. Whereas shortly afterwards, Mr. Harper’s chief of staff, Nigel Wright, also resigned from his position on the weekend. It was revealed that Mr. Wright wrote a personal cheque of $90,000 in favor of Senator Duffy so he could return wrongly acquired housing allowance.
