Three mature storm chasers, whose work was also featured on the former Discovery Channel show “Storm Chasers,” were among those consumed by the Friday night’s tornadoes in El Reno, Okla. The relatives of the deceased confirmed in a report on Sunday that Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras, and Carl Young were among the nine victims claimed in a string of tornadoes that hit Oklahoma on Friday night.
Tim Samaras’s brother, Jim Samaras, wrote in a post published on his Facebook page that “they all unfortunately passed away but doing what they loved.” Tim Samaras was the founder of the Tactical Weather Instrumented Sampling in Tornadoes Experiment, acclaimed as TWISTEX, which was tasked with conducting researches on tornadoes with aim of increasing time for warnings. A CNN meteorologist also covering the storms in Oklahoma on Friday, Chad Myers stated that the TWISTEX founder was known for his attention to safety. Myers alleged that “there’s just no one safer than Tim,” as “he would never put himself in danger. He certainly wouldn’t put his son in danger.”
Speaking on the matter, the Mayor of El Reno, Matt White, emphasized on the significance of staying indoors at the time of strong storms. He stated that “we had to deal with not only strong winds, but we had extreme hail, extreme softball-size hail.” He alleged that “El Reno had a lot of damage to the roads. In these situations, we can’t stress enough to people to stay inside and do what the weather men and women tell us to do.”
