One of Canada’s greatest divers, Alexandre Despatie, might not be among the hundred or so world’s finest divers competing in the National Capital Region this spring. Despatie is highly acclaimed for winning three world titles and more than two dozen other medals in world championships, including World Cup events, Commonwealth, Pan American and Olympic games. The renowned athlete mentioned in an official statement on Monday he might not be able to make it to the pool, during the Canada Cup FINA Grand Prix at the Gatineau Sports Centre from May 2-5, due to a slow recovery from his knee problems.

In a news conference at Gatineau City, Despatie stated that “the rehab and getting-back-in-shape part is taking a bit longer than I had hoped.” The athlete, who has been competing in international competition for almost more than half of his life, confessed that his body took a “big pounding” in 2012. It was elucidated that the headline incident featured a laceration, along the scalp line and concussion, as a consequence of when he struck his head on a springboard while training in Madrid, i.e. almost six weeks before the London Olympics.

Furthermore, it was added to the statement that current problems are a result of an infection after left knee surgery in October. Officials have disclosed his condition to be improving, though they allege that he’s getting close to a point where he wouldn’t have enough time to prepare for competition. It said that “this is not a year to cut corners.”
