The Federal Official Opposition Leader, Thomas Mulcair, has mentioned in a statement that he does not think the rest of Canada fully comprehends the damage caused by the floods that have ravaged entire southern Alberta. Mr. Mulcair made these comments at a Calgary pancake breakfast on Thursday, when he was noticeably wearing a cowboy hat and a Stampede “Hell or High Water” T-shirt. Mr. Mulcair is scheduled to visit the hard-hit Siksika First Nation, along with the Town of High River.

The NDP Leader is also expected to attend the Calgary Stampede parade on Friday morning. Mr. Mulcair explained his point of view, alleging that the flooding disaster demands that politicians to set aside their partisanship and participate in getting Alberta and the oil-and-gas centre of Calgary back on its feet. He further highlighted that this task is not just a local priority, but a national one. He reiterated that “I don’t think the people in the rest of Canada understand that.”

During the interview recorded on Thursday, Mulcair stated that “watching the grit, and the determination, and the incredible strength of the people of Calgary, it’s easy to forget that there are months, and months, and months of cleanup. And then years and years and years of rebuilding.” He added “and I don’t think that people have a full measure of that.” Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to reach Calgary on Thursday evening and later attend the parade, while Federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau will also be attending the Stampede events on Sunday.
