One of the most significant sports personalities of Calgary and a respected radio legend, Bill Powers, was found dead in his southwest home on Thursday morning along with his wife Donna Lee. Both husband and wife were found dead after the police was called on to a home in the Braeside neighborhood around 5:20 a.m. Upon investigation, homicide unit has recovered a potential weapon, a knife, and later also confirmed to have found a witness who saw a suspect at the scene. The authorities claim that the witness was just a passerby who has been taken in custody for questioning “without incidents.”

Duty Inspector, Mike Tillotson, discussed brief fact of the case saying that the suspect was known to the victims, though he refused to reveal any further details into their relationship. Inspector Tillotson stated that “we are looking at all those pieces of relationships and who is connected to who.” Meanwhile, Calgary police has yet to decipher the chronology of events that lead to the homicide at Powers home.

Powers will always be remembered for his quick wit and joke-telling abilities. He announced retirement from fulltime radio duty in 2009, i.e. soon after he completed almost 50 years in sports broadcasting and communications. Powers had started his career as a news reporter with the Edmonton Journal in 1961, soon after which he moved to Calgary for a position with the Albertan newspaper. He was asked to cover the 1965 Canadian figure skating championships and became a full-time sports reporter.
