A substantial fragment of a Quebec town was engulfed in wildfire on Saturday in result of a train derailment that caused multiple explosions in shape of a blaze sending enormous flames shooting metres into the sky. More than 1,000 people were immediately evacuated from their homes in Lac-Mégantic, i.e. almost 250 kilometres east of Montreal. Reports claim that few people have been reported missing, but Quebec provincial police Lt. Michel Brunet alleged that it is too early to decide of any casualties.

Flames were visible for hours after the derailment of a 73-car train carrying crude oil. Authorities have cordoned of the area while firefighters engaged with persistent blaze that was still in full swing. Brunet mentioned in a news conference that “we’re told some people are missing but they may just be out of town or on vacation,” adding that “we’re checking all that, so I can’t tell you at the moment whether there are any victims or people who are injured.”

A spokesperson for The Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway informed this afternoon that the train’s conductor had stopped just outside town before midnight to ensure that all the cars were secured. He later checked into Lac Megantic hotel for the night. However, vice-president of marketing for the railway that owns more than 800-kilometres of track serving Quebec, New Brunswick, Maine and Vermont, Joseph McGonigle explained that “sometime after, the train got loose.” He added that “it traveled under its own inertia to the centre of the town.”
