Authorities have announced that almost 1,500 evacuees of Lac-Megantic, Que., are expected to begin returning home in coming few days, as they were forced to vacate the town following a train derailment which resulted in death of five people while 40 went missing. A Quebec public safety officer, Jean-Thomas Fortin, explained that the resettlement plan is anticipated to be announced publicly on Tuesday, alleging that he hopes that the reintegration process will start at the same time too.

Fortin, and Mayor Colette Roy-laroche, highlighted that there were numerous issues that needed comprehensive attention, including air and water quality, before residents were allowed to return home. Amid the news of pending reintegration, police has decided to widen its search area for the missing victims of the disaster. Officials were able to locate five bodies over the weekend, however approx. 40 people still remain missing. Officials say that the decision of broadening the search area is dependent on the advice of fire investigators, as they have labeled specific areas of Lac-Megantic to be “red,” or off limits, due to hot spots following the powerful explosion.

In a statement issued on Monday morning, Sgt. Benoit Richard reiterated that the decision to expand the search area will be made by the firefighters. It was explained that out of the total 2,000 residents originally evacuated, 1,500 would likely be allowed to return to their homes. It was added that the air and water quality testing has shown safe levels in the community.
