A substantial amount of houses and business in Toronto still remain without power due to the intense damaged caused by Monday’s record-breaking rainfall. Authorities have repeatedly mentioned that hydro crews are working day and night to repair the damaged Hydro One transmission station, however more than 16,000 homes and businesses still remain deprived of electricity.

Authorities have reported that a Hydro One transmission station, tasked to supply the city’s electrical grid, was deeply flooded during the storm which resulted in suspension of the power supply to 17 other stations. Consequently, Toronto Hydro resorted to rotating outages from Tuesday onwards to ease the stress on the electrical system. Authorities alleged that it “may be necessary” to resume rotating outages on Wednesday morning to prevent overloading. CEO of Toronto Hydro, Anthony Haines, explained that one of two of the city’s main hydro supply stations was drowned in almost “20 to 30 feet of water.” He confessed that during its peak an estimate of 300,000 homes and businesses in the city were without power, especially in Toronto’s west end and Etobicoke.

Meanwhile, Toronto Mayor, Rob Ford, advised all residents in a statement released on Tuesday to conserve as much energy as possible. He mentioned that city’s power system was “hanging on by a thread.” At the same time, Environment Canada has forecasted more rain on late Wednesday afternoon along with a risk of thunderstorms. Previously, the agency released a special weather statement, warning of the possibility of “torrential downpours and damaging winds,” but the warning has since been lifted.
