Chairman of the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway (MMA), Ed Burkhardt, used largely remorseful and apologetic tone at the time of his first visit at the derailment site on Wednesday. The incident has now cumulatively consumed as many as 50 lives and completely ravaged the downtown of a lakeside municipality 216 kilometres east of Montreal.

Even though Burkhardt had previously been consistently insisted that “a series of events” lead to the deadly incident of Saturday, as he told a long list of contradictory stories that mainly put blame on local firefighters and mysterious vandals, Burkhardt finally confessed to a different story. He alleged that unfolding evidences are indicating that engineer Tom Harding failed to apply hand brakes on enough rail cars to stop the runaway train. Burkhardt announced that the engineer, whose name remains a mystery, is currently under police custody and has been suspended without pay.

Burkhardt stated that “he has been our employee for many years. He’s a guy who had a completely clear safety record — up until Saturday.” He added that “we think he applied some hand brakes. The question is did he apply enough of them. He’s told us that he applied 11 hand brakes. Our general feeling now is that that’s not true. Initially, we took him at his word.” Additionally, he claimed that “we don’t summarily fire people, and we have to go through a process with the union. He is not being paid. I don’t think he will be back working for us again. That is my personal opinion.”
