Upon her arrival at the town devastated with tragedy, Quebec Premier Pauline Marois demanded that the federal government shall provide financial support to compensate for recovery efforts in Lac-Megantic, while also condemning the actions of MMA head, asserting that his handling of the situation is “deplorable.”

Marois visited the site of disaster and met with local officials in order to discuss the strategic plan of recovery and how can the province be of any help in wake of the train derailment and fire that has killed 20 and left another 30 people missing. Talking to media after the meeting, Marois stated that “the families that are grieving, we are with them. And as premier of Quebec, I believe I can say I speak on behalf of all Quebecers who want to tell you we are in solidarity and sympathy with you.” Previously on Wednesday, Marois had promised a sum of $60 million to be made available for the community, dispensing $1,000 to each affected family to arrange for food and other essentials. She declared that $25 million would be made available immediately.

Later on Thursday, Marois reiterated her denunciation of the actions of head of the Chicago-based Rail World and chairman of Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railways Inc., Edward Burkhardt, who arrived in Lac-Megantic on Wednesday almost five days after the accident occurred early Saturday. She mentioned that “I found it deplorable, absolutely deplorable in my opinion,” asserting that “the leader of this business should have been here right from the beginning.”
