In a statement released Friday afternoon, police has confirmed that more dead bodies have been discovered from the scene of a train explosion in Lac-Megantic as the total reaches up to 28. It was disclosed that the coroner’s office has also additionally identified seven more victims, bringing the total number of identified victims up to eight, though only 93-year-old Eliane Parenteau has been named publicly so far.

A spokesperson for the coroner’s office, Genevieve Guilbault, explained that “the identification of eight people within a week of the accident demonstrates the exceptional effort and resources involved in this investigation.” It was previously clarified almost a week ago that the concentrated heat of the fire that boiled the scene for more than a day in result of a train derailment on last Saturday made it impossible to identify bodies because they were mostly entirely burnt. Providing update on the situation on the ground, spokesperson for the Quebec provincial police, Michel Forget, mentioned on Friday that few parts of the scene are still too dangerous for police to work. Forget elucidated that “we had to slow our research on the ground due to many factors – the air (quality) notably,” explaining that “it was putting our lives in danger, even though our workers have masks.”

RCMP officers and police from municipalities across Quebec met with provincial police investigators on the ground Friday, offering support and personnel. Moreover, crime scene technicians from the Montreal and Quebec City police departments are also allegedly on their way to provide help in Lac-Megantic.
