Transportation Minister of Ontario, Glen Murray, has promised that the province is unconditionally in favor of expanding transit in Scarborough, although the question still remains whether it will be in form of a subways or light rail transit. Speaking to reporters after having a meeting with Toronto Mayor, Rob Ford, at city hall on Monday, Murray stated that he needs Toronto city council to be one hundred percent sure on a decision, and later presenting an “evidence-based business model” before a subway plan could be hatched.

Consequently, Toronto city council is anticipated to vote on the controversial matter on Tuesday about whether it intends to continue with a Metrolinx, government-approved light-rail transit (LRT) plan in Scarborough, or annul it in favor of extending the Bloor-Danforth subway into the east end of the city. Murray told reporters that “we will sit down with the city once council has expressed itself.” He added that “I’m assuming that will happen tomorrow.” While later expressing his commitment to getting rapid transit system in Scarborough, Murray alleged that “it will be over my dead body that there will not be high quality rapid transit to Scarborough.”

Ford proposed last week that city could finance a Scarborough subway extension by raising property taxes by a “minimal” average of 0.25 per cent a year over four years, starting in 2015. Although a few weeks ago he took back his proposal of raising taxes any further, calling the Scarborough subway plan an “investment” that would pay dividends over time. Ford also added that “we all know new subways come with a price.”
