The Department of National Defense has taken notice of an incident that occurred late Monday night at a Canadian Forces Base near Halifax, due to which it has ordered all Canadian Sea King helicopters to remain grounded until the investigation is complete. Sources reveal that a Sea King helicopter struck the tarmac with its main rotors a little while before midnight on Monday soon after landing at CFB Shearwater in Eastern Passage, N.S., after a training flight. DND has officially confirmed that the helicopter experienced a “flight safety occurrence.”

Elucidating technical details into the incident, Lt-Col. James Hawthorne mentioned that aircraft had landed and was being refueled at the time when the accident occurred.  He explained that “the aircraft landed safely after a training flight and after which time the tail lifted off the ground and the main rotor struck the ground in front of the helicopter. Some damage was done to the helicopter and some damage was done to the infrastructure at 12 Wing Shearwater.” Hawthorne added that it’s unclear as to why the tail of aircraft lifted, which consequently forced the nose of the aircraft down.

Hawthorne mentioned that “the answer I got from the pilot is that he doesn’t exactly know what happened and he said it’s the fastest thing he’d ever seen occur in a helicopter. So it caught him by surprise just like it took everyone by surprise at 12 Wing Shearwater.” Additionally, he alleged that all five blades of rotor motor struck the ground, sending debris and sheared off parts flying.
