The Canadian Army underwent a much anticipated change in command on Thursday, as the latest change was deemed to transform a wholesale changing-of-the-guard for Canada‘s military leadership. The change of command ceremony was commendably well done under a hot sun on Parliament Hill, where Lt.-Gen. Marquis Hainse took oath and vowed to sustain the army’s proficiencies regardless of the impending budget cuts and queries regarding its role in the post-Afghanistan era.

Soon after the oath taking ceremony, the new head of Canadian Army mentioned that “it’s a great job that I’m facing right now.” He addressed the audience, alleging that “it’s to be able to have the Canadian Army continue to deliver efficiencies, to be able to deliver combat readiness, and to deliver great soldiers to be able to answer the call of the government.” Before he was chosen to head the Canadian Army, Hainse previously was working as the deputy commander of NATO’s Joint Force Command in Naples, Italy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hainse alleged that he now has “a new perspective on army matters,” highlighting that challenges faced by Canada’s army and military are no different from those in other countries around the world. He mentioned that “we all have to look at how we do things,” adding that “how do we think better to find efficiencies to be in line with the fiscally constrained environment? And this is my job, to make sure we are not going to do less with less, that we are not going to do more with less, that we are going to do what it takes to keep that professional capability.”
