An estimate of more than 1,000 true fans of Expos were present at a game scheduled at the Rogers Centre in Toronto on Saturday, as they expressively displayed their support for the return of baseball to Montreal. One of the MLB teams that are thought of having to most likely move to the city due their regularly weak attendance, The Tampa Bay Rays, was in town to play the struggling Jays.

The organizer of the event Expos Nation and a Montreal sports broadcaster, Matthew Ross, assured that his group does not intend to deliberately convince the Rays to move to Montreal. Supporting the cause behind the game, Prime Minister Stephen Harper also tweeted on Saturday that “I hope that the efforts of @ExposNation will one day be rewarded with a team in Montreal.” Analysts in baseball have continuously stressed in recent years to return baseball to Montreal, i.e. one of the largest cities in Canada and the United States that is still without a MLB team. The supporters of the cause mostly wore Expos logo shirts and tried to highlight their cause as much as possible.

Professional baseball in Montreal is striving since the 1880s, beginning from the old Driving Grounds on Mill St., i.e. one of the several locations that were picked as the proposed or possible sites for a future downtown stadium. Since the Expos left after playing in the city between 1969 and 2004, no professional baseball has been played in or around the city.
