The newly instated Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has announced to have already resolved the controversy surrounding the bank’s decision to place a woman on British banknotes. It was announced in an official briefing by The Bank of England on Wednesday that author, Jane Austen, will be replace Charles Darwin on the country’s £10 note by 2017.

It was declared that new notes will feature a portrait of Ms. Austen, along with a phrase from her bestseller novel, Pride and Prejudice, alleging “I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!” In the official press release, Mr. Carney mentioned that “Jane Austen certainly merits a place in the select group of historical figures to appear on our banknotes,” while elucidating that “her novels have an enduring and universal appeal and she is recognized as one of the greatest writers in English literature.”

Additionally, Carney promised that the bank will also be reviewing its procedure to select historical figures that appear on future notes. There was a growing concern, before this decision, about lack of representation of women on the country’s paper currency, though that issue is now resolved. Furthermore, Carney promised that he will constitute a formal process that will help in selecting the historical figures to be placed on banknotes, thus ending the controversial process that largely leaves the selection process up to the governor of the bank. It is noticeable that the £10 note is the most circulated bank note in Britain, with more than 750 million in current use, while compared to almost 308 million £5 notes.
