The five-woman relay team that made an inspiring attempt to complete a record-breaking swim across Lake Ontario decided to call of its efforts early in light of their youngest swimmer being hospitalized with hypothermia. 18-year-old Mona Sharari had to be pulled out of the lake on Friday showing symptoms of hypothermia. It was later realized that lake temperatures have dropped extraordinarily low, resulting in the team to end their swim almost 100 kilometers short of their destination in Burlington. They arrived at Heydenshore Park in Whitby at about 2 p.m.

The change of plan was announced Twitter, where it said that “water temperatures have plummeted and are too dangerous to swim in as we get closer to Toronto.” The team also stated in a following tweet that “we are all upset but this decision had to be made.” The women were suffering extremely unfavorable conditions during the initial 48 hours of their attempted 305 kilometer journey.

Moreover, when the team was leaving Kingston on Tuesday, they were faced by a storm that served up frigid waters, chilling winds and crashing waves. Consequently, the storm eventually delayed the swim by a full day while leaving the swimmers seasick. Eventually the situation became too unbearable for the majority of the team, which had members ranging in age from 18 to 61. The swimmers mentioned on Twitter that “we have worked tirelessly and faced many challenges,” and “Lake Ontario gave us everything from high waves and storms to calm but freezing water.”
