Canadian foreign-service officers have warned to suspend services at 15 embassies worldwide from Monday onwards in shape of the most substantial action taken by the union so far. The president of the Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers, Timothy Edwards, explained that the foreign-service officers union has already begun shutting down services at embassies Sunday evening, which are generally tasked to process thousands of visas for visitors, temporary employees and students. He stated that “some of these missions start their workdays on a Sunday, and they are already out in the Middle East in particular.”

Edwards pointed out that the union has so far never halted its services in all 15 locations at once, alleging that with these extreme measures, the strike will eventually cost Canadians much more than earlier estimates predicted. He mentioned that “the potential losses could far exceed the $280 million that the tourism industry has put on this,” adding that “resolving our dispute would cost the government $4.2 million.”

At the same time, Citizenship and Immigration Canada has announced to have prioritized its “urgent humanitarian visa applications” as the department monitors the labour situation. The press secretary for Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander, Alexis Pavlich, specifically mentioned in an email that all visa offices keep essential staff to deal with such “essential” services. It was stated that “CIC is providing training on an urgent basis so that more staff can process applications, and is requesting that staff work overtime where possible.”
