Residents of almost 12 homes situated outside Penticton have been subjected to an immediate evacuation alert since last night as crews continue battling the wildfire that awoke earlier in the afternoon and quickly thrashed the area. The violent fire amplified instantly and took control of more than 70 hectares of dry grass, brush and timber near the community of Okanagan Falls.

Owner of a nearby Wild Goose Vinyards, Roland, stated that “we’re very concerned about the dryness. I mean, we certainly need it for the grapes; we’re not complaining… but we always get concerned because there are so many people in the forests, the back hills here.” Another site at risk is The Dominion Radio Telescope Observatory Penticton, which is located near the fire area though thankfully it is believed that winds are blowing the flames away from the facility. A representative of Kamloops Fire Centre, Melissa Welsh, reported that “we have five helicopters and 31 firefighters responding, as well as three air tanker groups.” She updated that as of 9 p.m., the fire is completely uncontained, though its dispersion has decelerated giving hope to crews who aim to get a handle on it soon.

While the cause of fire remains ambiguous and is still under investigation, authorities’ suspect that it was started by people. This speculation is largely made on the realization that there were no reports of lightning in the area at the time when the fire was started. The Kamloops Fire Centre credits natural fire barriers such as roads and rock faces for the 70-per cent containment.
