In a worrying statement issued on her website, TTC Chairman Karen Stintz mentioned two days after the Toronto Police shooting incident that she offers “sincere condolences” to the friends and family of 18-year-old Sammy Yatim, who was fatally shot nine times by Toronto police officers soon after midnight on Saturday as he left a stopped Dundas streetcar near Bathurst St. A video of the incident was released on the internet and spread exponentially causing a public outcry.

In her statement issued on Monday, Stintz alleged that “the videos of the incident, taken by private citizens, may not tell the entire story but they shook me as they did most of you,” as she added that “speaking as an elected official, and as a parent, I was disturbed.” She elucidated that “Toronto Police Service Chief William Blair has stated his commitment to provide all the answers,” and “even if legally obligated, this commitment comes from a desire to protect the Toronto Police Service as an institution. It also comes with the knowledge that the actions of one, or a few, don’t represent the beliefs of the great majority of their colleagues.” Meanwhile, she assured that “the integrity of the institutions we collectively represent is paramount, more important than any one employee.”

Conclusively, Stintz alleged that “I know the TPS is an exceptional, committed group of women and men willing to Serve and Protect you and I.” She highlighted that “I am assured that Chief Blair has given his “unwavering” support to finding answers. Toronto needs this reassurance.”
