An important and key Liberal figure has announced to escape from the upcoming race for the party’s nomination in the riding of Toronto Centre for the upcoming federal by-election. Former Ontario Liberal MPP and deputy premier, George Smitherman, mentioned in a statement that he was almost about to return to active politics, but he preferred to continue focusing on “the FFF path (fun, family, finances).”

In an interviewed statement, Mr. Smitherman revealed that he left the recent Pride festivities in Toronto “with the intention of running.” However, he later realized to have lost a part of his well-known thirst for political battles, particularly in case of the expected open nomination contest that would have made him compete against former journalist, Chrystia Freeland, and community activist, Todd Ross. Mr. Smitherman alleged that “fighting with Liberals isn’t my strong suit,” adding that “I won’t be a candidate now. I won’t be contesting a riding in the 2015 general election or any other.”

In light of Mr. Smitherman’s unexpected departure from politics, the most expected candidate next in line is Ms. Freeland, who has already secured support of Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau’s inner circle in her pursuit of the Liberal nomination in Bob Rae’s old riding. Ms. Freeland has an extensive portfolio for being outspoken about the income disparities and the financial squeeze facing the middle class and working with Mr. Trudeau to develop his leadership platform. Ms. Freeland has recently shifted from New York City to Toronto as she newly quit her management position at Thomson Reuters.
