A report recently released by the Canadian Medical Association on Tuesday reveals that poverty is the main cause that leads majority Canadians to get sick. The report published after consultation and information gathering from public consultations at six “town halls” in cities all over the country last winter and spring showed that several factors including poor housing, lack of access to healthy food and early childhood programs all actively affect and implicate on health.

The president of CMA, Dr. Anna Reid, revealed that “we heard that the biggest barrier to good health is poverty.” The Yellowknife emergency room physician stated that federal, provincial and territorial governments must prioritize to develop an aggressive action plan to eliminate poverty. She highlighted that “it really hit me in a visceral way when we did those town halls.” It was pointed out that those who can only afford junk food, instead of healthy food, tend to develop diabetes. Whereas, people living in mouldy and substandard housing often use asthma medications, but that does not circumvents asthma. On top of that, it was revealed that social isolation also has mental health consequences, which sometime results in increased suicide rates.

Speaking at the press conference to launch the report on Tuesday, Reid stated that “the cost of inaction is higher than acting.” It was highlighted that almost half of all health-care outcomes are related to “social determinants” such as income, housing, education, disability, gender and race. Whereas, conversely only a quarter of health outcomes are the cause of health-care system, including access to health care sources and waiting times.
