Guelph police chief, Bryan Larkin, announced the findings of a report on Wednesday, which revealed that both speed and roadway conditions caused the vehicle driven by Guelph Const., Jennifer Kovach, to uncontrollably slide and crash into a bus last March. Chief Larkin published the report of an internal investigation into Kovach’s fatal crash at a news conference.

26-year-old Kovach was answering a call for help made by a fellow officer at the time she lost control of her cruiser and crashed into a bus on Imperial Road South in Guelph on March 14 around 12:30 a.m. The investigation into the accident revealed that Kovach was driving around the curve at approximately 115 km/hr at the time she lost control, which made her car spin clockwise, and before she was able to regain control of the car it had another very close interaction with ice that lead to her losing control again. Consequently, the car swung again, this time in counter clockwise direction, while the vehicle crossed centre line at 75 km/hr and hit the bus that was travelling at approximately 43 km/hr. Since there was nobody in the bas at the time, only the driver suffered minor injuries in the collision.

Even though Kovach was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, Larkin stated that it would’ve failed to prevent her death even if she had. Larkin further revealed that Kovach was invited by her family in Ottawa that day, but she chose to come to work.
