While responding to queries of reporters during a news conference on Friday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper shared that he thinks new pipeline projects are a good idea in principle, while also highlighting that all such individual proposals still undergo “rigorous” review. He mentioned that “I think the reality of anybody who looks at the business (is) that the absolute safest way to transport energy products is through pipelines. That’s the safest way you can go.”

During the news conference in Quebec City, he pointed out that while he totally supports pipeline projects in principle, as he thinks they benefit regions across Canada and enhance the country’s energy security, he still insisted that all such projects are subject to “rigorous independent analysis.” It was explained that “in terms of addressing specific concerns, there is a process that will do that, and the government will ensure that all recommendations from that process are followed.”

The issue of a new domestic pipeline has come at a time when sharp sensitivity regarding transportation of crude oil is being observed due to recent Lac-Megantic disaster. Hence, in regards to new energy projects, Harper stated that the government will take independent evaluations that look at environmental and economic effects, “particularly on independent scientific evaluations.” It was highlighted that “obviously we think it is a good idea in principle in terms of selling our energy products.” It was added that “we have massive energy resources in this country,” and so “it’s important that Canadians all across the country benefit, and it’s important that we enhance our own energy security.”
