Toronto Transit Commission has announced that the streetcar in which Sammy Yatim was shot and tasered by police will be returned to service this week, and its serial number will not change as it was once reported to. According to the TTC spokesperson, Brad Ross, several senior staff members of the TTC had intended to alter the serial number of the street car to show sympathy towards the Yatim family.

The serial number of the street car, i.e. 4058, is easily visible in a video of the incident when Mr. Yatim was shot at nine times and then tasered by police officers. Mr. Ross stated that “it was a possible consideration to be sensitive to the family,” and “if that’s what they sought, then that is something we could consider doing, but in the end, we’re not going to.” However, the decision of ultimately not changing the serial number has come after the TTC’s chief executive officer, Andy Byford, held a meeting with the victim’s family on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Ross alleged that he cannot report about the conversation held with Mr. Yatim’s family because of their desire for privacy.

18-year-old Mr. Yatim passed way in a nearby hospital soon after the shooting on July 27. The shooting took place after the passengers on the westbound Dundas streetcar complained about Mr. Yatim having pulled out a three-inch knife on the vehicle near Trinity Bellwoods Park. Mr. Yatim was alone in the streetcar at the time he was shot from the outside.
