Management of the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market north of Waterloo, Ont., made an astonishing announcement on early Monday morning via Twitter, asserting that regardless of the massive fire that completely burnt out its main building, its outdoor section would still open for business on Thursday. President of Mercedes Corp., which owns the farmers’ market building, Marcus Shantz stated in a Tweet that “we want to have the Thursday outdoor market open, as well as the Peddler’s Village building — which contains the flea market, as well as some food vendors.”
Speaking of the area cordoned off by investigators, Shantz alleged that “we’re going to have to move some of the outdoor vendors to different locations because [the fencing] takes up a bit of area.” It was added that “there has been an enormous outpouring from all kinds of people,” and “people are shocked and saddened and they are looking for a way forward and a plan to get back up and running.”
A representative of the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office, Lonnie Schubert, elucidated that the investigation to determine the cause of the fire has already begun, but it cannot be speculated how long it will take for the search to complete. Schubert explained that “will it take a few days? It might. Will it take one day? It might,” asserting that the “bottom line is we need to try and determine exactly where the fire started and how it started.”
