In a published interview on Wednesday’s edition of the Journal de Montreal, Quebec Premier Pauline Marois mentioned that still feels responsible for those who were hurt or consumed by the shooting that took place more than a year ago at the election-night party for the Parti Quebecois leader’s victory. She added that Denis Blanchette, who was killed in the shooting, and Dave Courage, who was shot but survived, unintentionally ended up preventing a much more deadly bloodshed and a potential political assassination on the night of Sept. 4, 2012.

Ms. Marois mentioned in the interview that “essentially, they saved my life by acting as a barrier, even if they didn’t know it. But that’s what happened anyway,” adding that “if (the gunman) had got into the room and had fired at all those people who were there it would have been carnage.” The suspect arrested in relation to the incident, Richard Henry Bain, faces a raft of criminal charges, including murder. The attack took place at a Montreal’s Metropolis nightclub where Marois was delivering her victory speech after her party performed well in elections. The shooter was dressed in a blue bathrobe and wore a black balaclava.

Quebec Premier stated that “it is what may have traumatized me the most. It’s the life of completely innocent people. They paid for me. That keeps coming back to me.” She further elucidated that “I feel responsible. It is because of me that this happened to them. It was essentially me that was being targeted”
