After several notable leaks in recent weeks, the Parti Quebecois government is finally all set to table the draft version of its proposal to alter the Charter of Rights in Quebec. Aimed at eradicating all public expression of religion among government employees, Democratic Institutions minister, Bernard Drainville, will be announcing comprehensive details of all laws included in the bill at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday.

It has been already reported that Charter of Quebec Values will utterly ban state employees, including police officers, doctors, and teachers, from wearing headscarves, yarmulkes, or obvious crosses and other religious symbols. However, a recent revelation alleges that a lengthy list of exceptions is also included in the bill, including the crucifix in the National Assembly and the politicians present in the National Assembly. Since the details into the proposed charter have emerged, Quebecers seem to be of growingly different opinions on the issue. An early Leger poll had illustrated that almost a majority of Quebecers were of the opinion that strict rules regarding religion were necessary, but almost half of those thought that legislation would create more problems than it would solve.

However, another recent poll conducted by SOM finds out that a sizable number of Quebecers have become increasingly comfortable with immigrants and immigration, especially those with university educations, and those who live in and around Montreal. It was found through the poll that those who have Mother-tongue francophones in Quebec were the least accepting of immigrants, since 64% of them alleged that it’s good for Quebec to have multiple ethnic and cultural groups.
