More than several hundred demonstrators marched in downtown Montreal in order to express their condemnation of the proposal of the controversial Charter of Quebec Values, which aims at banning public employees from wearing prominent religious symbols, including headscarves and turbans, in the workplace.

The protest was organized by Ken Taylor, who claims that the charter will impede on equal rights for Quebeckers. A McGill University philosophy professor and Order of Canada recipient, Charles Taylor, addressed reporters and all those participating in the anti-charter rally in Montreal that “I really believe this is a fundamental feature of our society — equal rights for everyone.” It was added that that “if we let that go, we have nothing to give our children and our grandchildren, and it’s for them that we’re all here.”

The federal government voiced bitter opposition of the proposal earlier this month, when it openly disclosed that it plans to launch a legal challenge against the plan. The federal minister for multiculturalism, Jason Kenney, alleged that he has serious concerns against any proposal that would limit the ability of Canadians to practice their faith and participate in society.  On the other hand, the federal New Democrats and Liberals have also denounced the proposal. Others said they were “appalled” and “embarrassed” by the proposal. Taylor mentioned during the protest that “our society is organized around rights for everybody, and we can’t let that go for one minute without regretting it for the rest of our lives and the rest of our history.”
