An 89-year-old woman, Audrey Tobias, was summoned in court due to a recent case about her refusing to fill out the national census. Tobias is a renowned and longtime peace activist, who claims to have refused to fill out the census details because the company tasked to carry out the survey creates the hardware and software for a U.S. weapons manufacturer. Lockheed Martin Canada is a subsidiary of global security and aerospace company Lockheed Martin based in Maryland, it was awarded a $43.3 million Statistics Canada outsourcing contract in 2006.

Apart from that, Tobias has also raised the issue that Lockheed Martin is obligated to provide any data collected from another country to the U.S. government in case it is sought under the U.S. Patriot Act. She mentioned in a statement issued on Tuesday “that information should be kept in Canada and not with the U.S. Canada is known for its excellent information technology companies that could have taken the contract; there is no need to use an American weapons company.”

On the other hand, Statistics Canada has stated on its official website that “no contractor will ever have access to confidential census responses.” Tobias pleaded not guilty during the hearing held in a packed Toronto courtroom on Thursday morning. In case the court concludes that Tobias is guilty, she could be sentenced to serve in jail and/or face a hefty fine. Statistics Canada collects information about Canadian citizen and concludes a survey report every five years.
