Incoming premier of the anticipated Nova Scotia government, Stephen McNeil, mentioned in a statement issued on Wednesday that The Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project will not be awarded any attention and support of Nova Scotia’s new Liberal government unless the province is granted cheaper rates. Only a day after winning a commanding majority government, McNeil alleged that his message for his counterpart in Newfoundland and Labrador, Premier Kathy Dunderdale, is very clear.

In his official statement issued to The Canadian Press, McNeil alleged that “I can be very clear to her that if it’s not in the best interests of Nova Scotia ratepayers, then we would not be supportive.” He added that “until we see something new, Muskrat Falls is where it is, which is on the drawing board.” McNeil revealed that he largely is agreement with a decision taken by Nova Scotia’s Utility and Review Board, which says that the province needs access to more of the energy from the development at a better price.

McNeil announced that the Nova Scotia utility company, proposing to build the $1.5-billion Maritime Link enabling the shipment of electricity to his province, Emera, is free to proceed with it as a private interest. He mentioned that “I think it makes a lot of sense that if Emera and its shareholders believe this is such a great project, then build it and we’ll just buy the energy at a reasonable price.”
